The baby is out… the feeling of relief and awe begins… as you looked at your baby for the first time what did you think? what did you notice first? what surprised you? what aspects of meeting your baby for the first time delighted you? how did you feel?
Chances are there were a multitude of emotions as you met your newborn babe for the first time, the amazing moments as a mother stares at her newborn, her eyes drinking in the incredible sight in front of her… sometimes midwives place the baby on the mothers abdomen and the mother is overwhelmed with the moment…the feeling of awe and ecstasy and euphoria…
some midwives place the baby gently between the mothers legs on a soft sterile drape and let the mother, when she is ready, to pick her baby up in her own hands for the first time… she will first look at her baby and realize it’s hers and then gradually or quickly come upon the idea, the desire to scoop her baby up in her own hands perhaps suddenly in a rush to touch, to feel, to hold her baby…
the strong protective instinct of a new mother seeing her vulnerable newborn lying on the drape may be moved to the feeling, the desire to gather her baby in her arms… and as she does the softness… yes that exquisite softness of the newborn baby’s skin against her own skin triggers the beauty of mothers love… all through her pregnancy the mother to be may have had beautiful daydreams of what it will be like when she holds her own baby for the first time… they may well have been fleeting daydreams… just like little whispers in her mind of wondering what it will be like when she meets her baby for the first time… wondering what the baby will look like and all the while wishing just wishing she could have a little tiny peek… if only there was a little window she could quickly have a little look at her baby… she can hardly wait…the anticipation… the excitement, the awe and wonder of just what that moment will be like… wondering … and then when it happens it’s so much more than we ever expected… all the senses are involved, the wondrous sight, the intoxicating newborn aroma, the satin-velvet softness of the newborn skin, the tiny sounds of the newborn gentle vulnerable cry, and as the mother caresses her newborn all her precious waiting is rewarded… laying down beautiful memories of the moments she met her newly born babe for the very first time…
The moments are worth cherishing aren’t they? They sustain us as we raise the child. They create such a strong bond of love and protectiveness that the “mother is born along with the baby”.
Mother nature triggering an extraordinary relationship bonded between two humans; mother and babe… is there actually a relationship stronger than this?
I wonder?
