Birth Stories > Kristy's Birth Story

Our precious little girl, Naveya arrived on 19 April 2007 at 7.24am in the Birthing Suite at Sutherland Hospital.  She was 3.17kg and 52cm long, she is a very alert baby and very happy who doesn't like sleeping very much! by Kristy...

On my due date, 18 April, my dad said to me 'Kristie, I think you are going to have this baby today', probably because I looked so MASSIVE!!  Well, he was right, I went into labour that evening.  At 9.30pm I went to bed and woke an hour later with some pains.  I stayed in bed for about an hour, thinking is it, isn't it??  Anyway, the pains were quite regular, every 10 mins and were starting to become a little more intense, I was now having to think about each one and sit up on the bed.  At 11.30pm I woke my husband, Taleb, and told him I thought this was it, he said 'are you sure?', as I had pre-labour pains the week previous.  Anyway we went downstairs and kept timing them, they very quickly went to 6-7 mins apart so at this time I thought I might just give the hospital a call, I had a contraction on the phone to them and they told me to make my way in.  After a 1/2 hour drive from our house and contractions every 5 mins, I was relieved to arrive which was about 2am.  I remember I had one at the lights turning to the hospital with a police car next to me which was quite funny as I was trying to be very discreet which by now, was not possible!  Luckily the Birthing Suite was available so after a check from Fiona the midwife, she told me I was 5cm dilated.

The contractions were becoming more intense now and were coming 3-5 mins apart.  I hopped in the bath which was great, although at this stage I kept hopping in and out and I couldn't stay in one position, I was sitting on the toilet quite a bit of all places!  My husband was great with the water and cold washers, and supporting me with the rocking.  My waters gradually starting to come away and I remember as you had told us Julie to think of each contraction as one more down, I just took each one at a time and tried to get through it that way, remembering that I would have a break very soon before the next one, that's what I found worked for me.  I also closed my eyes for most of the time, I found this helped me focus and go into 'my zone'.  When I reached the pushing stage, I remember making that exact sound you told us when you have the overbearing urge to push, then I knew it was time for her to come out, and so did the midwife.  At around 6am this happened and I went back into the bath and stayed in there for this stage and for the arrival, and as Naveya was posterior, I pushed for about 1.5 hours, but luckily the midwife let me go, as at 1 hour of pushing they were going to call the doctor in, but when they told me this I was so determined to push her out, as I Kristie and Taleb welcome baby Naveyadidn't want the doctor to intervene, then 24 mins later she came out.  Our beautiful little girl had arrived.  Taleb said to me when I asked 'what is it?', 'I think it's a boy, yep, it's a boy'.

Well, he was wrong, it was a girl, which I just knew all along, mother's instinct I think!  After having her on my chest for a little while, Taleb then held Naveya, chest to chest - HOW BEAUTIFUL!!  (I would recommend all father's do this), while I delivered the placenta.  She then took to the breast very well and sucked away, she was awake for about an hour when she came out and has pretty much been awake ever since!!

She is the sunshine in our lives, and if it’s possible we love her more and more each day.

I am so happy with our birthing experience and that I had a natural birth.  I honestly could not have done this without attending your classes Julie, all the information and knowledge you shared with us really helped me to get through the labour.  I tell everyone about your classes, and many of my friends have now attended your classes also.  I also recommend the Epi-No, I had no tearing and I believe this was the reason why.

The classes are great for the dads too, Taleb was amazing through the birth and has just been the most hands-on dad.

His family cannot believe how good he is with her, wrapping her, putting her to bed, settling her... it is just beautiful to watch and has brought us so much closer.

Thank you Julie, we are forever grateful.    Love Kristie, Taleb &  baby Naveya
