What is Osteopathy?
Osteopaths are primary care practitioners, and are trained to be able to recognise conditions which require medical referral. They are also trained to carry out standard medical examinations of the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous system.
In Australia, osteopaths are statutorily registered practitioners and five year, full-time university training is available which covers anatomy, physiology, pathology and general medical diagnosis in addition to Osteopathic Technique.
What is cranial osteopathy?
One of the fundamental principles of osteopathy is that "the living body is a self-correcting, self-regulating, self-healing mechanism", constantly working to establish its optimum level of health.
Cranial osteopathy is a specialised field within osteopathy
Paediatric cranial osteopathy is cranial osteopathy for children and their carers.
Cranial osteopathy is a therapy which assists your body to heal itself by making use of the body’s natural rhythms. The Cranial Osteopath is trained to listen with her hands, monitoring the subtle motions of the body physiology and assisting the body to rebalance itself. Using her hands, the osteopath helps the body re-establish normal physiological motion.
Why is it beneficial?
Cranial osteopathy helps the newborn and mother to adapt to the significant changes that have taken place during childbirth.
How can cranial osteopathy help me during my pregnancy?
Cranial osteopathy can assist women to accommodate to the changes to her body throughout the pregnancy and after giving birth.
Pregnancy places enormous strains on the body’s ability to adapt to the changes in the posture. A pregnant woman needs a strong and pain free body to prepare her for childbirth. Osteopathy assists with sciatic type pain, symphysis pubis pain, indigestion, reflux, difficulty breathing that can induce anxiety, headache, and neck pain. Being pregnant does mean that you must suffer these symptoms.
Can cranial osteopathy help my baby get into a better position before birth?
A cranial treatment which uses the involuntary self correcting response in your body can help your body to accommodate to a better position for both you and your baby.
Why does my newborn baby need cranial osteopathy?
Being born is probably the most profound experience we go through.
Birth is a shock and we all deal with it in our own unique way regardless of the circumstances of birth.
The newborn is superbly adapted for being born and goes through a natural unfolding process that is initiated by birth. From a fluid environment into a gravitational field we take our first breath by inflating our lungs for the first time. When she takes her first breath, and her lungs inflate for the first time the direction of blood flow through the heart is reversed. Her first breath and subsequent breaths help to open out the strain and compression in her thorax and continue to expand the lung fields until the changes in pressure assist the return of cerebro- spinal fluid in her brain to expand the head and assist the amazing shape change to her head return to normal over the first few hours after birth. Crying and feeding also assist her to adapt to being born.
Sometimes the compression of birth is difficult for the newborn to overcome and the very gentle approach of cranial osteopathy helps both mum and baby adapt to the birth process and assists with bonding, feeding and settling.
Can cranial osteopathy help me with breastfeeding?
Tension around the neck and upper back can inhibit normal physiology and interfere with milk production and drainage of the breast. Cranial treatment may help your posture when breast feeding.
Adapting to being born is a challenging process and many babies struggle with feeding, settling to sleep and passing stools. The circumstances at birth differ but babies often respond well to cranial treatment which assists the newborn to overcome the effects of being born by freeing up the vital supply from nerves for sucking, swallowing and digestion.
My baby is a fussy feeder, can cranial osteopathy help?
Sometimes the compression from birth affects the free movement of the head and neck. Conditions like torticollis change the symmetry of the jaw and these babies are usually fussy feeders coming on and off the breast because they can’t get into a comfortable position for feeding. A clue is when your baby favours one side to the other; this may not be because of your milk supply or the shape of your nipple.
My baby is crying all the time and I’m feeling confused, can you help?
There are many reasons why your baby may be unsettled and crying. If babies could talk it is said it would be easier to find out the problem. But that’s just it, they are talking to us. There cry is telling us they are in pain and need relief.
Osteopathy can assist in finding out the cause of pain. Even when a medical intervention or medication is required Osteopathy can also be applied to help your baby unfold and adapt to life outside the womb.
Cranial osteopathy can assist mum and baby to overcome breastfeeding difficulties and develop communication between mum and baby by relieving the physiological shock of birth. Once mum and baby can take a good deep breath and let go they will both be able to relax and enjoy time together.
