Essential Birth Consulting
Home Birth Services and Birth Support
Melissa Maimann m) 0400 418 448
e) melissam@idx.com.au
Essential Birth Consulting is a new home birth and birth support service available to pregnant women.
Birth is an important event in a woman’s life, and you only want the best for your baby and yourself. The service is run by an independent midwife and consultant, Melissa Maimann. Melissa is a Registered Midwife who supports women who choose to birth at home. She also provides birth support for women who choose to birth in hospital and is the Director of Essential Birth Consulting.
Who is Melissa Maimann?
Melissa has extensive hospital and birth centre experience. She has worked in over 20 maternity hospitals (public and private) in NSW and knows the maternity services well. She has worked in delivery suites, postnatal (wards and home visits), antenatal wards and clinics, birth centre and special care nursery. She has completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA, AGSM) and has senior health management experience. She is experienced in women’s health and is completing a course in the Billings Ovulation Method. Melissa is passionate about helping women achieve safe births and helping them feel empowered by their experience.
As an independent midwife and consultant, Melissa is not contracted to any health service or hospital. She is uniquely placed to access complete and impartial information and advice for your benefit. Melissa maintains close contacts within the maternity services and she has an up-to-date database of birth-related journal articles. She can easily locate a vast range of childbirth
related information, as you require.
Home Birth Services
The home birth service offers full antenatal care, including preparation for birth. Birth takes place at the woman’s home, unless we decide that the birth would be safer in hospital. Water birth is chosen by many home birth women as it provides such great relief in labour. Full postnatal care and support is available. As a client of the home birth service, you also have access to the range of services provided by Essential Birth Consulting. Books, research, and other resources are available for you as you prepare for the birth of your baby.
Home birth services: What can I expect?
The home birth service is flexible and is tailored to meet your individual needs. Pregnancy visits occur in your home or in Melissa’s office / home, at a time that suits you. They generally go for 2 hours each and incorporate individual childbirth education.
The general standard of visits is as follows: booking until 28 weeks: monthly; 28 – 36 weeks: 2-weekly; 36 weeks – birth: weekly. This is flexible according to your needs.
Melissa will attend you when you are in labour and will remain with you for as long as you require. Melissa takes time to explore what birth means to you and the kind of birth you are seeking, and together we work to make this a reality. In the rare event that Melissa is not able to attend your birth, she will arrange for another experienced independent midwife to attend your labour and birth. Postnatal visits do not occur on any schedule: we take each day as it comes. Generally you can expect at least 5 visits after your baby is born and Melissa is always available by phone.
Melissa is registered with the health funds and you are able to claim some or all the cost of your home birth through your health fund.
Essential Birth Consulting
Essential Birth Consulting was established in 2006 after working with hundreds of women who were troubled by upsetting birth experiences. Other women were trying to access care and services and were coming up against road blocks: “My doctor / midwife says I can’t do that”, “The hospital won’t provide this”, and so on. Melissa discovered that what women really need is an impartial expert to show them a way forward and provide researched advice, emotional support and advocacy.
Did you know that knowledge is power? With information, you can make decisions that help you achieve the birth that is important to you. You will experience less postnatal depression, an optimal birth experience, fewer breastfeeding problems and better bonding with your baby and partner. Like other women, you realise how important it is to feel comfortable with your approaching birth. As more women have become aware of Essential Birth Consulting’s specialised services, they have gained understanding, confidence and clarity. You can too.
While I am not in the business of waving magic wands, the consultancy often helps to make magic happen! After an initial chat, you'll realise that taking the step and talking to us was easier than you thought. You will find the service to be friendly, warm, understanding and professional. There is no judgment, only support. Whether you’re planning a caesarean or natural birth, breastfeeding or bottle feeding.
Essential Birth Consulting’s services include birth debriefing, birth preparation, individualised childbirth education in your home, assistance to choose a hospital, doctor, or model of care that is likely to meet your needs and expectations, researched advice, second opinions, and VBAC / twin birth preparation. Health fund rebates and gift vouchers are available (perfect for a pregnant friend or partner). All services are provided in the comfort of your home and phone and email support is available.
Birth Support
Birth support is available for women choosing a hospital birth. Perhaps you are having your first baby and need some extra support, or maybe your last birth didn’t go as you’d hoped and you would like impartial and professional advice and support. Women choosing a hospital birth are able to access all of the services provided by Essential Birth Consulting.
