About Julie

Pregnancy and active birthing is my passion. I have (almost) seen it all. And it has been my privilege. There is not a type of birth I have not attended; I have attended delivery suite, birth centre, operating theatre, water births and homebirths, over 150 so far and counting. My courses are therefore steeped in practicality as well as fact. I am often told my explanation of what to expect in labour is both accurate and encouraging and that my newborn cry impersonation is spot on.

In addition to my professional acumen I understand pregnancy, birth and parenting is a deeply human experience. Support is not synonymous with facts, and expectant parents require a combination of the two. The most common feedback I receive from "My parents", (as course graduates are affectionately called) are that they felt at home in my classes and that they are no longer afraid. And that is how I measure a job well done.

In my career I have worked in or studied the full gamut of pregnancy, birth and early parenting subjects. My areas of expertise includes:

  • Calmbirth
  • Childbirth
  • Breastfeeding
  • Post-natal Depression
  • Hypnobirthing

Despite beginning my professional training in 1988 my course content and expertise is in line with the most current recommendations. Learning is an ongoing process for me, which means that continuing my professional education is a pleasure. I regularly attend conferences and seminars. This means you can rest assured that you are getting the most current information as my knowledge is constantly being updated and includes the latest evidence based studies.

In addition to my experience, I am well respected in my field and am involved in planning committees, tertiary education delivery, professional associations and support groups. Some notable roles include:

  • National editor of the Journal of the National Association of Childbirth Educators "Interaction"
  • UTS Bachelor of Midwifery Planning Committee
  • St George & Sutherland Hospitals Birth Centre Development Committee
  • Convener of the St George & Sutherland Shire Homebirth Support Group
  • Regular presenter at professional conferences and seminars

My relevant formal qualifications:

  • Advanced childbirth educator and trainer (NACE)
  • Calmbirth practitioner training
  • Childbirth Educator (PCA)
  • Breastfeeding Counsellor (PCA)
  • Hypnobirthing practitioner and trainer
  • Karitane Post-natal Depression telephone counsellor training
  • Cert IV workplace education and training
  • Recognised provider with HCF, CBHS, Manchester Unity and Grand United Health Funds
